Passenger Rail Service Expansion in Wisconsin Thanks to Bipartisan Infrastructure Law

Governor Tony Evers and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation recently announced that $2.5 billion from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s Corridor Identification and Development (ID) Program will be used to study the expansion of rail service across Wisconsin.

The funds will be used to explore expanding passenger rail along the following routes:

  • Adding a daily train between Milwaukee and the Twin Cities;
  • Extending the Hiawatha line between Chicago and Milwaukee to Green Bay;
  • Making trains between Milwaukee and Chicago more frequent;
  • A new line between Chicago and St. Paul, with a stop in La Crosse;
  • And a service line connecting Milwaukee to Madison to Eau Claire.

One of the new routes running from Milwaukee to Chicago could be launching as early as the first quarter of 2024.

Following the study, projects can be selected for next steps, including for future grants and environmental clearance. The Corridor ID Program will fully fund the studies.
