The United States added 336,000 new jobs in September, according to the monthly report released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Average hourly wages rose 4.2 percent from a year earlier and by 7 cents, or 0.2 percent, compared to August. The national unemployment rate remained at 3.8 percent, the same as in August.

The largest gains were seen in leisure and hospitality services (+96,000), food services and drinking places (+61,000), government (+73,000), health care (+41,000), and social assistance (+25,000). September also marked the return of employment in food services to pre-pandemic levels. September was the 33rd consecutive month of job gains in the U.S. and shows the continued vitality of the labor market and the economy, despite federal policies aimed at curbing inflation.
